  • "Mom wants to bring her boyfriend’s kids to my child’s first birthday after I said no"

I'm looking for some perspective on this situation. My mom has had more boyfriends than I can count. Most of her relationships last a year or two at most. All through my
  • childhood, it was boyfriend after boyfriend, and I was always expected to immediately meet them and their families, whether I was ready or not.

  • She's been with her current boyfriend for about a year and recently moved in with him. I'm fine with him coming to events, the issue is that he has three kids, all much younger than me.

  • Tomorrow is my child's first birthday. My wife and I planned for it to be a small, personal gathering with just immediate family, meaning my wife's family, my dad, my brothers and sisters, and my mom.

  • The day before the party, my mom asked if she could bring his kids. I told her no, because I want to keep the guest list to immediate family and I'm not comfortable meeting them yet.

  • She told me she had "no choice" but to bring them because she can't leave them alone, and said, "my family comes wherever I go."

  • My dad has had a girlfriend for two years and has never once imposed her or her family on us without asking. I feel like my mom is making this about her relationship instead of respecting my boundaries.

  • Am I being unreasonable for sticking to my decision, or is this a fair boundary given her history of doing this my whole life?

  • Update: After she sent me 20 paragraphs trying to gaslight me and telling me I needed to question my values and principles, I responded plainly

  • and simply, with just a touch of pettiness. She then decided that 'her family' was more important and said she's not coming. That's her loss.

  • callmedancly Your family should also come first. You don't know these people, and your mom shouldn't be the one deciding who is and is not invited to your child anything.
  • Thin_Rip8995 You're not being unreasonable- this is a textbook case of someone making their choices your problem.
  • Your boundary is clear: immediate family only. Her partner's kids are not that. If she can't come without bringing them, that's her decision, not your failure. She's had a year to introduce them in a lower- stakes setting; waiting until the night before a milestone event is manipulative timing.

  • You're allowed to protect the tone and guest list of your child's first birthday. If she chooses not to come, that's sad, but it's her putting attendance on the condition of you bending your boundary-not you excluding her.

  • Reasonable_Star_959 I would let my 'No' be my last word on the subject. It is important to stick to your boundaries. I would have a backup plan because I predict the strong possibility that she will show up with them anyway. And that puts on the spot in front of everyone!
  • So I would also have a backup plan of what to say to her if she does. Have a wonderful party and Congratulations on your first child!

  • Long-Oil-5681 No is a complete sentence. My petty side would want to sh t back "Funny how you don't seem to care about me or my family" Out of curiosity how old are the kids, your mom and her bf? Do you think shes trying to treat them like do overs?
  • Prestigious_Shop_598 9 and 15 years old. Maybe but that would be her like fourth time trying, when she gets bored she leaves
